FICTIONAUTIC INTERVENTIONS in public spaces, exhibitions and theatres

Paul Sernine & Miss Coochie aka Jack Hauser & Sabina Holzer, Nao Coclea (SP), 2007.
PAUL SERNINE & MISS COOCHIE emerge as figures straddling the liminal line between fiction and reality. They are agents of the poetic and the uncanny with a deliberately unstable existence. They are informed by an ongoing adventure that relates to pulp fiction, spy cinema, and avant-garde theatre, inserting acts of imagination into the everyday world. Their activities—Dreams, Walks, Visits, Performances, and the Swinging Spy Path—connect to a praxis rooted in dérive and psychogeography, laced with glamour. The references to Godard, Anna Karina, Eddie Constantine, Modesty Blaise, Monica Vitti, Joseph Losey and many others, leads them to a deep alignment with cinematic archetypes of cool, seductive resistance in esthetic rebellion. Their „first appearance“ was in summer 2005. Like conceptual ghosts, they trade in “individual and pulp fictions,” suggesting that personal narratives and (pop) myths are both equally valid currencies of meaning. The invocation of Jean Genet’s notion—“To dream oneself, to make this dream tangible in order to become a dream in other people“—situates them within a queer, poetic politics of performance to open consensus reality.
Warren Ellis & John Cassaday „Planetary“, Wildstorm, 2017.
Miss Coochie, woman of uncouth men, remembers how terrified she was, when she looked back to the abandoned shore, where she was stolen from by the white bull.
Where her clothes fluttered in the breeze behind her.
Now she is awake and opens wide her wild rose court, for you, whom she loves.
The stars, whose ranks are herded by Lucifer, vanish for a daily day.
Watch out! Cross borders with no illusions.
Welcome guests and accept spirits, as to fit a candle to its flame.
Not so far from dessert comes a memory, a shining amour, a moon covered in black, a note for the future. Wilderness pricks out from miraculous springs.
There could be a gun in her warm hand.

„Franz Graf turned 70 on 22.07.2024 and on this occasion I am giving him an exhibition instead of a museum, which I am putting together for district 4 art at the multicultural Schlingermarkt in Vienna Floridsdorf, as my 35 years of exhibition activity was also triggered by an invitation to an unrestrained art installation in Franz Graf’s studio at Davidgasse 79/3/2 in 1100 Vienna in 1991. I selected artists known and unknown to him to reverse the motto of a fabric bag produced by Parallel Vienna with the text: we don’t talk to strangers, which I wear almost every day. Perhaps we will all talk to strangers and foreigners on the occasion of this exhibition and enjoy the new things that are being created with and around Franz Graf on the occasion of his 70th birthday. (Elke Silvia Krystufek, 2024)“

pass.age is a performative piece of music that David Ender and Jack Hauser performed once in the Mozart Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus as part of a modern music festival in 1991. They have now produced a double long-playing record from the recording as a prototype.
Miss Coochie träumt is a performative practice by Sabina Holzer. Since 2009, she has repeatedly performed this dreaming a body writing in Miss Coochie’s clothes.

Visiting friends and compainions. …
… „When Attitudes Become Form: Bern 1969/Venice 2013“ brings together the original works presented at the Kunsthalle and Schulwarte, loaned for the event by important private collections and international museums (for example the works of Carl Andre, Claes Oldenburg, Bruce Nauman, Eva Hesse, Giovanni Anselmo, Hanne Darboven, Reiner Ruthenbeck, Marinus Boezem and Richard Tuttle); site-specific interventions „reenacted“ directly or in association with the artists and their Estates (for instance the works of Joseph Beuys, Daniel Buren, Walter De Maria, Jan Dibbets, Alain Jacquet, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, Keith Sonnier, Ger van Elk, Lawrence Weiner and Gilberto Zorio); plus a selection of photographs, videos, books, letters, ephemeral objects and other original materials relating to the 1969 show and its context. The exhibition also includes unpublished materials from the Szeemann archive.
The purpose is to revisit, with the same intensity and energy, the Post-pop and Post-minimalist art research of the time, ranging from Process art to Conceptual art, Arte Povera and Land art, that was developed internationally during the mid-1960s, but also to highlight the contribution made by Harald Szeemann, a curator capable of thinking beyond the limitations set by critics‘ labels and the theoretic associations of his time. In particular, the focus has been on the fluid and mutable development of art, with the purpose of exploring the physical and conceptual horizons of material and immaterial visual languages, set in a multiform and continuously changing territory that transcends the immutable nature of the art object. Characterized by a new approach where everything was left to the liberating process of doing, where the viewer was not impeded by boundaries, protection systems, pedestals or perimeters, the exhibition became a dialectical field of encounter between the individual artists and the curator, between the event and the architecture: a place where the works formed links with each other, in a kind of continuously-evolving organic weave. … (www.oma.com)

… The dangers of making an exhibition about him instead of with him were great: as with Beuys, to whom Schlingensief often referred, there is a tendency to present things that were used as props in connection with performances as precious sculptures and to upgrade them to museum objects, which they were never intended to be. Susanne Gaensheimer and Schlingensief’s widow Aino Laberenz escaped this danger: their pavilion is staged as a total work of art, the central space of which re-stages the stage of the Oberhausen production “The Church of Fear of the Stranger in Me”.
