Withing Notebooks

WITHING is an ongoing, durational and collaborative project situated in the field of language-based artistic research. Conducted by an international group of six women artists, writers, performers & researchers, the project is dedicated to collectively exploring the intra-action between bodying and languaging: How does bodying affect languaging? How does languaging affect bodying?

We first connected in October 2023 during Convocation II, a four-day gathering of language-based artistic research in Vienna. Since then, we have been creating shared conditions and situations for the mutual exploration of body/languaging through an iterative process of research, alternating individual and collective constellations, online and offline situations, and intertwining experimentation and reflection. Based on a series of scores and their enactments, we have developed a practice centered on embodied writing as a situated process of sense-making.

Since 2023, two phases of exploratory research have been conducted around these questions, generating a wide range of material in various media: text, images, audio, and videos. This material has been partially documented on the Research Catalogue – the online platform of the Society for Artistic Research (SAR): WITHING on RC

The project was briefly presented at the SAR Forum in Tilburg in 2024 and at the 16th SAR International Conference on Artistic Research in Porto in 2025.

In summer 2025. We were very happy to be able to meet again in person in the frame of an Artist in Residence during ImPulsTanz.

Taking the possibility of being together we made a reading at Department Joy – a performative sculpture in time @ Gallery Lombardi Kargl.

Another crystallization of the practice was shared as an audio-piece broadcast on radio WORM in January 2025.

The WITHING Sessions
The WITHING Sessions seek to extend our process-based research into a sonic form. Each episode features a practice of WITHING and experiments with iterations that blur writing into sounding. Performing a gesture as an echo of what has been and toward what is still becoming.

Moving between practice-sharing, research-reporting, and poetic reading, The WITHING Sessions is a series of six episodes broadcast on Radio WORM (search: Withing Sessions to find all 6 episodes) between October 2025 and March 2026.
